Liverpool legend Rush: West Ham kid Rice better than Stonesby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool legend Ian Rush has no doubts about the potential of West Ham utility Declan Rice.Rush feels that Rice, who has just penned a new deal, is on a similar path to Manchester City defender John Stones who made a £50m move to the Etihad in 2016 after breaking into the Everton team as a teenager.”He reminds me of John Stones, when he was Everton,” he said on beIN Sports.”I think Rice is a better player, at that age. Whether [he plays for] England or Ireland, it’s up to him to decide. He’s come on a lot. For me, he’s a centre-back. He can play the holding midfield role as well. To be at his best, for me he’s a ball-playing centre-half.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Newcastle boss Bruce confident Joelinton will be regular goalscorerby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveNewcastle United boss Steve Bruce is confident Joelinton will be a regular goalscorer.Joelinton got off the mark at Tottenham last month and Bruce feels the build-up to that goal – 17 passes in 46 seconds – proves Newcastle’s ‘big, physical animal’ will get benefit from better service.”I think when he played for Hoffenheim, he played towards the left a lot. I saw him play against Manchester City and he played to the left, which a lot of the teams do,” he told the Evening Chronicle.“They’re not actual wide players or wingers as such – they play on the left-hand side – and I think he got used to that role.“Certainly he’s aware – and we’ve made it clear to him – that we have to score more so all the spotlight, of course, is on him and Almiron. But, as a team, we have to create more and that’s got to be the aim going forward.”

ESPN’s Jon Gruden is apparently not a fan of Oregon’s brightly-colored uniforms. On Monday, ESPN aired Gruden’s QB Camp with former Ducks’ quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is expected to be a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft. During Mariota’s session with Gruden, the NFL analyst expressed some distaste for Oregon’s fluorescent yellow uniforms, saying he rooted against the Ducks when they wore them. Sadio Mane has come a long way since joining Liverpool three years ago – but things could have been very different if he had signed for Manchester United. And while that may sound like a Liverpool fan’s horror story, it wasn’t far from coming true.Ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final with Tottenham, the 27-year-old admitted that he came close to signing for United after his final season with Southampton. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? “I was really, really close because I even met up with them,” he told the Mirror.“So I was coming, I was there and I spoke with the boss who was there before (Louis van Gaal). “They made an offer, but in the same week, [Jurgen] Klopp called me.“He said: ‘I think it’s the right club. The right coach for you, and I think it’s better that you go to Liverpool’.“For me I think it was the right time as well. I said, ‘I am going to Liverpool.’”In a blistering 2015-16 season with Southampton, Mane caught the attention of the Premier League’s biggest clubs with some standout performances, including scoring a brace against Liverpool and a hat-trick against Manchester City. Some fans at the time joked that Klopp signed Mane just so Liverpool wouldn’t have to play against him – and Mane enjoyed the suggestion, saying the theory could have some truth to it.“At that time, leaving Southampton, I saw many clubs, but I thought Liverpool was the right club for me,” he said.“I played against Liverpool, I played against City, United, every team and I scored a lot against Liverpool when I was at Southampton, but still I thought this club is my club!“The boss (Klopp) was at Liverpool and yet I always scored against them. I think he thought: ‘He’s always killing us, so let’s buy him!’ Yeah, just to stop me scoring against Liverpool – so it was good for us both!”When Liverpool endured a sluggish start to the 2018-19 season, there were rumours that Mane and strike partner Mohamed Salah had suffered a breakdown in their relationship. It had been suggested that there was a growing conflict between the two players but Mane laughed off these suggestions, adding that any rivalry between them was totally friendly.“This kind of thing, it happens in football,” he said.“It doesn’t matter if I score or not as long as the team scores.“Some people want to say it’s a rivalry, but I think that’s what makes football so exciting – a rivalry. But it really doesn’t matter to me. Honest!” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the web
Tiemoue Bakayoko has decided he will return to Chelsea this summer after his loan spell at AC Milan. The France international joined Chelsea from Monaco in 2017 and played an important role in his first season, but was sent to Italy last summer following the arrival of coach Maurizio Sarri and midfielder Jorginho.Milan have an option to buy the midfielder for €35 million and ex-coach Gennaro Gattuso and director Paolo Maldini said earlier this year that they were keen to make his deal permanent. With three years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, however, he is eager to return to London. The 24-year-old’s brother and agent Abdoulaye says other clubs have already been in touch to discuss a potential summer move, but he would prefer to continue his career with the Europa League winners.”There are some pretty interesting, quite heavy clubs that have inquired, but we give priority to Chelsea,” he told L’Equipe. “We already know, there is the Champions League and we are looking for stability, Tiemoue has decided to stay there.”Bakayoko made 42 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal for Milan as they finished fifth in Serie A, booking a return to the Europa League. But the former Monaco star had controversial moments in Italy. He was dropped to the bench briefly after turning up late for training and then had an argument with Gattuso on the touchline in May.Bakayoko was told to get ready to replace the injured Lucas Biglia but television cameras spotted him appearing to tell Gattuso to “f*ck off” after a brief discussion. He then took to social media to defend himself against the subsequent criticism, saying he “only repeated [Gattuso’s] words”.Gattuso, who has since left Milan, said that he had put the incident behind him the following day, adding: “I don’t mind if a player tells me to go to hell – the important thing is for him to show respect to his team-mates in the dressing room.”I have to think about what is best for AC Milan. If the players need to swear at me for the good of the club, then I can deal with that.”
