Los Angeles, United States | AFP | Former heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield believe Tyson Fury can dethrone Deontay Wilder if Saturday’s WBC championship fight goes the distance.WBC heavyweight king Wilder takes on Britain’s Fury at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday in a battle of unbeaten fighters. The high-stakes contest could ultimately pave the way for a money-spinning unification bout against Anthony Joshua, the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion. While several former heavyweights believe Wilder possesses the punching power to force an early victory on Saturday, Lewis and Holyfield believe the odds will tilt in Fury’s favour the longer the fight goes on.“I think with Deontay’s power, he might be able to end it early, but if Tyson can frustrate him and it goes the distance, then it could go his way,” Holyfield said Tuesday.“Tyson’s always been the bigger fighter. In fighting Deontay it’s the same case. If things get difficult, he’s (Fury’s) got more experience and a lot of tricks.”Lewis, the former undisputed heavyweight king, echoed Holyfield’s verdict.“If it goes the distance then it belongs to Tyson Fury,” Lewis said. “If it’s a short fight it will belong to Deontay Wilder.”Heavyweight legend Mike Tyson meanwhile believes Fury’s mental durability will carry him to the title. Fury, 30, has made a successful return to boxing after a lengthy layoff which saw him battle depression and problems with drink and drugs. Fury said in October he had contemplated suicide in 2016 as his life spiralled out of control.Tyson said that Fury’s ability to rebuild his career after overcoming personal turmoil sets him apart from Wilder.“Although Wilder’s punch is strong, nothing can compare to the mental strength Fury has shown both in and out of the ring,” Tyson said.“It’ll be a close call, but I think Fury’s got a true fighting chance.”But former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe is backing Wilder’s punching power to overwhelm Fury early on.“If Wilder comes out and means business then he should beat Fury with ease,” said Bowe, the undisputed heavyweight champion in 1992. “My prediction is Wilder by knockout!” Share on: WhatsApp
A Sense of Camaraderie Across the nation, 800,000 Federal workers missed their first paycheck Friday, Jan. 11, and could miss their next one Jan. 25 with Democrats and the White House at an impasse over President Donald Trump’s long-promised border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Bongiovi said it’s important not to get caught up in the politics of the situation and to focus on the people and families being impacted. New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy and Dorothea Bongiovi organized the lunch event, and said they plan to host more until the government shutdown ends. Photo by Chris Rotolo The Hackensack Meridian Health network (including Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel) has announced it will waive co-pays and deductibles for emergency care for furloughed employees and families. The Community YMCA and YMCA of Western Monmouth County announced it will offer free facility access and childcare payment relief to furloughed workers and families in Monmouth County. The YMCA is also waiving monthly dues for existing members impacted by the shutdown.Red Bank Borough Schools announced a partnership with its food service provider, Chartwells, to provide free breakfast and lunch to students whose families have been impacted by the shutdown. “It’s the thought that makes a difference. It’s the thought of them reaching out and understanding our predicament,” Foley said. “For me it’s not about the meal. My husband works and we have cans of soup and food at home. This is about coming together with other people who are suffering through it and feeling like a family. It’s frustrating but we’re in it together.” EPA pollution official Kathleen Foley was one of the diners who ventured to the Red Bank eatery and said it was less about the meal and more about the sense of camaraderie she felt while spending time with others suffering the same plight. On a frigid Jan. 21 afternoon – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – the JBJ Soul Kitchen opened its doors for a special two-hour lunch session in which furloughed workers and their families could sit down for a free meal at the Monmouth Street establishment, with a menu that included two soup options, meatloaf, a fish dish and a chicken entree. The partial government shutdown began Dec. 22. Lunch Break, located at 121 Drs. James Parker Blvd in Red Bank, is offering furloughed employees and their families continental breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. and a hot lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Murphy said she spoke to TSA employees who are still required to show up to work despite not collecting a paycheck for the past month and are trying to save money by carpooling to Newark Liberty Airport. RED BANK – In the midst of the longest federal government shutdown in the country’s history, local organizations, schools and even a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer have stepped up to make the lives of furloughed workers a little easier. Murphy said the first wave of diners included employees of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Coast Guard personnel. Murphy said it’s something they had been thinking of organizing for some time. In conversations, Murphy said diners expressed worries about collecting unemployment and described interactions with unemployment office workers who were “disinterested” in assisting, or had no answers. “They said they can’t afford the gas money,” Murphy added. “The bottom line is, these are normal people. These are all of us and they are so thrilled to be here and so thankful. They were a little apprehensive at first about showing up, but now they feel a little kick in their step, because they know there are others in the same boat and people in the community who are trying to help.” The event was organized by Jon Bon Jovi’s wife, Dorothea Bongiovi, and her Navesink River neighbor, Tammy Snyder Murphy, the wife of Gov. Phil Murphy. Other Local Groups Stepping Up Cash Flow Worries “Anyone who goes a month without a paycheck is going to be in very big trouble in New Jersey,” Bongiovi said. “We are a resource for people. We’ve been open for seven years and we see people struggling. Time can get tough and we want to be there for people. None of this is a handout. It’s a hand up.” On Jan. 11 a bill signed by Trump guaranteed full backpay for impacted federal workers. “We kept thinking that the government was going to reopen, but eventually it became pretty clear that it wasn’t going to reopen. So, in all honesty, we probably waited too long to do this,” the First Lady said in an interview with The Two River Times. “But as soon as we reached out to the Bongiovis, who already have this amazing facility, it wasn’t long before we had a plan in place,” Rather than lunch, Environmental Protection Agency official Kathleen Foley said she was in search of camaraderie and companionship at the JBJ Soul Kitchen. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With wet weather harvest delays, deep discounts on delivery and low yield at the end, wheat had a rough year. Are there reasons we should still grow wheat?Crop rotation — wheat adds a third crop to our rotation. Generally we get a 10% yield bump to the next crop in the rotation. And with a three-crop rotation we reduce disease and insect pressure for all crops.Wheat can be a good cover crop. We can plant it after soybean harvest, unlike other cover crops. We can even plant it after corn, but be aware that Fusarium head blight will likely be worse if you are planning on grain harvest. Wheat, like oats and cereal rye will help hold onto nitrates. If we want we can graze wheat, or if we get a good stand and have good prospects, we can keep it to harvest as grain. This may be our perfect cover crop. Production possibilities for wheatPlanting date — Fly free date in Ohio is also our agronomic trigger for the best planting dates. From recent experience we probably want to plant within a week to 10 days after the date. Long-term data says we should get about the same yield if we plant in the 14-day window following fly free. Fly free dates in Ohio range from Sept. 22 in northern Oho to Oct. 5 at Southpoint. We can reduce the chance of nutrient movement by applying the fertilizer in the spring into the growing crop. If, for example, we need 90 pounds of P2O5, we also get 20 to 35 pounds of N along with that (assuming MAP 11-52-0 or DAP 18-46-0). This puts on the N when we need it in the spring and gives us a growing crop to apply phosphorus.Variety selection — get good genetics with excellent disease resistance. Pierce Paul, our OSU wheat and corn pathologist, says that to reduce the threat of Fusarium head blight and to get good yields, choose a variety with high resistance to head blight and plan to apply a fungicide if conditions require.Row width — we have possibilities. Using a drill we can plant at six to 10 inches. And many of us have our split row soybean planters – on 15-inch rows. It gets a cover out there and doesn’t take too large of a yield hit. What will 15-inch row wheat yield? Because some Ohio wheat producers are interested in growing soft red winter wheat in 15-inch rows to utilize a more precise planting implement, we can reduce equipment inventory, Modify Relay Intercrop (MRI) soybeans into wheat, sow cover crops, establish a forage crop, and/or reduce seed costs.Wheat yield in a 15-inch row is important in evaluating a row spacing change.Research done by Beuerlein and Minyo in 2008 in Ohio with three wheat trials found 7.5 inch row spacing to out yield 15-inch row spacing by about 7.2 % or 6.6 bushels per acre (bushel per acre). In 2009 and 2010, Lee and Herbek, of the University of Kentucky, grew three varieties of wheat at two locations in 15-inch and 7.5-inch rows. Varieties tested were known to be prolific (varieties produce a lot of tillers). Yields ranged from 70 to just over 120 bushel per acre. In two of the environments, there were no differences in yield between 15-inch and 7.5-inch rows. In the other two environments, wheat yields in 15-inch rows were about 8.5% less than wheat yields in 7.5-inch rows.Johnson, in 2006 and 2007, examined wheat yield in 7.5 and 15-inch row wheat in Ontario. Wheat yields were reduced from 5 to 8 percent when wheat rows were widened. In Ohio selected wheat varieties have been evaluated over yield in 15-inch rows. In 2014, at the OARDC Wooster site, 25 varieties averaged 109 bushels per acre with a range from 115.5 to 101.4 bu/ac. Two year tests of 14 varieties gave an average yield over all varieties of 100.3 bu/ac and a range of 103.7 to 96.1 bu/ac.In summary, where row comparisons were made over row spacing; wide row wheat averaged about 7.4 percent less than narrow wheat for the varieties selected. However, the data would suggest the wide row yield effect is also influenced by variety and site. Seed costs may be reduced when going to a wide row. Long term data from Steve Prochaska and Jason Hartschuh at OSU’s Crawford County farm show a 16 year average yield of 75 bushels per acre for wheat and 31 bushels per are soybeans in their MRI work — not bad for two crops in one year. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Wednesday said that Virat Kohli has the edge over Suresh Raina to bat at number four going by the current form of the two players while also saying that he would want Yuvraj Singh in the playing eleven for the World Cup.Stating that Yuvraj did not get a chance to bat on Wednesday since Raina was sent up the order to have left-right combination, Dhoni said, “Major difficulty will come when Yuvraj gets going and scores one or two 50s, that will be the time we will be in a dilemma. Number four slot is very important for us. Right now it is a slot war. It is number four slot where Kohli needs to bat with Gautam Gambhir at number three.””To perform to his potential, Virat needs to bat up the order. That is where Raina can score batting down the order as well and he has done very well batting at number five and six. So, it will be a slot war more than for a place in the playing eleven.”Kohli is sort of a player who likes to spend little bit of time early and then go after the bowlers. Still, there is a bit of chance where Virat may get an edge over Raina seeing the current form he is in,” he said after India crushed New Zealand by 117 runs in their second and final World Cup game here.Talking about importance of having Yuvraj in the team, Dhoni said, “What is important is we are playing with four bowlers. A part-time spinner is really important especially if it is left-arm away going spinner. That really adds on to the bowling strength, that’s the one big advantage he has got over others. Once he gets going, it is difficult to stop him (Yuvraj) from scoring runs.”advertisementAsked whether he is worried that Yuvraj has not been scoring big in recent times, Dhoni explained, “Today, he did not get an opportunity. It would have been nice for him if he had batted. It is important to have runs under your belt. You may be talented but at the end of the day you need those 30 or 40 runs and then you start thinking positively. Then you look to dominate the bowlers.””Positive thing about Yuvraj is once he scores, he scores through the series. Being a left-arm bowler, he has been contributing right from South Africa, he has been a big strength to the team. If we play with three seamers and one spinner or two seamers or two spinners, Yuvraj role becomes important.”He gives us the odd breakthroughs required in the middle overs. That is a big asset he has got where he edges over the others. If all the batsmen are in good form, I do not mind one batsman out of form. But the amount of talent he has got I will back him fully. We are not playing with seven bowlers,” said Dhoni. On the decision to send Raina ahead of Yuvraj today after he got himself promoted up the order, Dhoni said, “That was the decision taken by Gary (Kristen). I was in the middle (batting). Both of us were padded up. We wanted a left-right combination. Virat got out and that is the reason why I got promoted myself. If Gautam had been out, Yuvraj would have come in.”India batsman Suresh Raina. AP”I remember the Peshawar game when I batted at number three or four. Later on, we were not able to capitalise in the slog overs and then I batted consistently for five, six or seven slots. That number you have to change the game and I did for the team. All of a sudden, if I have to change again to play up the order it will be difficult. At the same time, we have got talented players in the side to fill in those slots.”I feel batting at number five to seven is a bit difficult as you have to bat according to the demands of the game at that point of time. Especially when you see Virat in a good form, he can play to his potential if he is played up in the order rather than batting at five six or seven.”Dhoni also talked about S Sreesanth’s theatrics during matches and said he has no problem till the pacer does not cross “boundaries”.”I am very specific to him and told him that he should not cross a few boundaries. It is better that you do not cross those boundaries. If you want to irritate someone that should be the opposition and not your side. Till he does both these things, I am really happy to let him do whatever he wants to do. As for his behaviour today, I do not think there was much. I must say that bit of chit chat is always fine. It does not mean that whenever we play cricket such things does not happen.advertisement”As I said, there are certain boundaries that you should not get too personal with a player. If these guidelines are followed I am quite happy with it. More often than not it is the batsman and Sreesanth who knows exactly what is going on.”On the positives gained ahead of the World Cup, Dhoni said, “We have achieved whatever positives we can from practice games. From here on we have to start from scratch. We are playing on February 19 and hope we will perform to our potential.”On his own batting approach in the game on Wednesday, Dhoni, who scored an explosive unbeaten 108, said, “I wanted to spend more time in the wicket. In the last two three games, I tried to score off every delivery but one has to see the wicket whether the ball will come or not. I was pushing myself too much that was one of the reasons that I was getting out. I wanted to make the most out of this warm-up game.”So, I said to myself that irrespective of whatever happens in the first 15-20 deliveries, I will be careful and after that I will look to score. My strength has always been like that. Even if my strike rate is initially 60 or 70, I can always accelerate. My main aim was to rotate with my partners.”Dhoni said whether Aswhin will get to play in the World Cup will depend on the condition and pitches.”I think Ashwin is a positive character and has tremendous belief in himself. Whatever variations he has got, he backs himself to bowl in those areas. What we have seen lately is that he can contribute with the bat also. That is a big positive. On making him play or leave him out, we will decide after seeing the wicket. We have to know whether the wicket will spin or not and then go with two pace and two spinners or two pacers and three spinners,” he said.Stating that he wants to back each and every player, Dhoni said, “We want to back each and every individual irrespective of the fact whether he has played ten years, eight years or just made his debut. What we try to do is not to let any player dropped from the side.””The core teams needs to be tight together. As far as Yuvraj is concerned he is among the seniormost players with the amount of experience he has got from 230-240 odd international games. He has got plenty of experience batting at four and he has come up ranks from batting at number five or 6-7.advertisement”It is a tough slot to perform because more often than not you don’t get a chance to perform because the top order contributes if you are playing in the sub-continent. It’s a plus to have him in your side. Big positive, big match player. The tournament is happening in India and he will push himself to perform.”- With PTI inputs
Indian captain M.S. Dhoni’s concern over fitness is understandable but to say the team lacks high levels of fitness is wrong. It’s almost like saying Indians do not know how to run between the wickets or take difficult catches. Even Sachin Tendulkar has taken some tough catches on the rope. I hope Indians remember that. The World Cup has just started warming up and fielding will make the difference. Fielding and fitness are two different issues and Dhoni’s boys are not exactly lagging behind, though I have read some genuine concerns about the side’s bowling abilities.Indian skipper M.S.Dhoni runs out Bradley Kruger of the Netherlands off a throw from Virat Kohli. For any team, fitness and fielding are issues that should come naturally because these are integral to a player’s success on the field. A failed batsman can participate in some excellent run-outs and a failed bowler can run fast to stop some extra runs. Both eventually matter. International cricket is full of such examples.Fielding in the subcontinent is a lot different from that seen in South Africa, Australia and England. The weather here tires you out in the later stages of the game. As the match progresses, the player feels the pressure. Often, he cannot keep his eyes on the ball because he sweats profusely and cannot grip some crucial catches because the palms give way.Dhoni has a number of young players who are super fit. The Indian Premier League, where one needs to be quick with anything and everything, has also helped the Indian team. The players must make quick runs, take quick wickets and then need to stop those extra runs. They must have high levels of fitness.advertisementMany have often argued that the big scores will help a side win the day. That’s not true. Runs saved will actually make the difference between win and loss. It again boils down to fitness. Dhoni is concerned because a few catches have been dropped and some runs lost. But that has not cost him a game. Indians are cruising safely. Let the boys enjoy their game.- Jonty Rhodes has played for South Africa in four World Cups, starting 1992. Liverpool legend Rush: West Ham kid Rice better than Stonesby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool legend Ian Rush has no doubts about the potential of West Ham utility Declan Rice.Rush feels that Rice, who has just penned a new deal, is on a similar path to Manchester City defender John Stones who made a £50m move to the Etihad in 2016 after breaking into the Everton team as a teenager.”He reminds me of John Stones, when he was Everton,” he said on beIN Sports.”I think Rice is a better player, at that age. Whether [he plays for] England or Ireland, it’s up to him to decide. He’s come on a lot. For me, he’s a centre-back. He can play the holding midfield role as well. To be at his best, for me he’s a ball-playing centre-half.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say
