US Defense Secretary backs Egypt’s transitional roadmap

first_imgCAIRO – Imposed by the military following its July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s transitional roadmap stipulates amending the constitution and holding fresh parliamentary and presidential elections.Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi said Saturday that US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has reiterated support for Egypt’s roadmap for political transition, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.The top Egyptian diplomat met with Hagel in the Bahraini capital on Saturday, where they attend the Manama Dialogue, an annual gathering of Arab Gulf defense officials.Fahmi said the US Defense Secretary voiced hope that a democratic system can be established in Egypt with the least tension among the nation’s different political forces, the ministry statement said.
