DONEGAL’S HEALTHY WALKS PROGRAMME STARTS THIS WEEK

first_imgDonegal’s Health Walks programme kicks off this week with volunteer led guided community walks, which will run for eight weeks in communities throughout Donegal.The walks will take place in Dunfanaghy, Falcarragh, Lifford, Ballybofey and Donegal Town.Ann Marie Crosse, Eco-Health Promotion Officer, HSE West says, “The Healthy Walks are open to all members of the community and are designed to get people more active in the natural environment. The walks are part of the Green Prescription programme, which is the first of its kind in Ireland.” The Green Prescription programme was developed by the HSE in partnership with local doctors and local communities, Get Ireland Active, the Irish Heart Foundation, Donegal Road Safety Working Group and Donegal Sports Partnership.The Green Prescription Programme is supported nationally under Dr. Nazih Eldin, Health Promotion Lead, Dublin North East and following the completion of the evaluation in 2013, the programme will be rolled out nationally in a phased process.The Green Prescription programme is based on the idea that physical activity in nature results in positive outcomes for both physical and mental health. The programme aims to prevent and tackle overweight and obesity, while also promoting health and quality of life through the following:– Increased physical activity – Promote positive mental health– Reduce stress and promote restorative health– Increase self-esteem and ability to make positive behavioural choices– Increase social health and wellbeing– Reduce health inequalities by providing a low cost, accessible physical activity programme in local communities – Promote community engagement and healthy sustainable communities– Provide training and education for positive lifestyle change– Reduce costs for the individual and the health serviceThe Healthy Walks will involve a weekly leader-led gentle walk that will be from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, and is suitable for anyone over the age of 18 who wants to improve their health. The walks will give you the chance to enjoy the countryside, become more active and meet new people. Opportunity to train as a volunteer walking leaderIf you would like to get involved, the HSE is running a training weekend for volunteer walking leaders. As a walking leader, you will lead and support groups on short weekly walks in your community, over an eight-week period.
