USAID Breaks Ground for US$2.1M Road Project

first_imgThe United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on April 11 broke ground for a US$2.1m feeder road project covering about 21 kilometers connecting four communities in Nimba County. The 21km feeder road project commences at the junction leading to Tappita through Kpatuo,  Zuaplay, Doumpa, Gaopa, Garwompa and Yonkiayee in Yarwin Mensonnoh District in Nimba.According to the overview of the project read by David Wounuah, who spoke for the USAID Chief of Party for the construction, the feeder road is a pilot project under the US Presidential Agriculture Initiative, known as “Feed the Future.”It is being carried out in counties in Liberia where the Food and Enterprise Development/FED has its agricultural activities, according to program officials. The occasion was attended by a cross section of Nimba local officials, including Rep. Mantenokay Tingban, Development Supt. Dorr Cooper, Public Works Nimba Engineer Lahaison Waritay and Public Works Assistant Minister for Feeder Roads, Sumoiwuo Harris.Meanwhile residents told the Daily Observer that the road which is to be reconstructed is vital because it connects most of Nimba central towns between Saclepea, Tappita and Yarmin Mensonnon where food production is high. They said other roads that needed attention are those connecting Gogain and Tappita and Zuaplay to Doumpa, rehabilitated in 1978.  They said that quality roads remain one of the challenges to agricultural productivity in Nimba County.Additionally, they said the road leading to most of the agriculture productive areas, including Kpablee, Buu – Yao, Gbi and Doru, needs rehabilitation to prevent farmers living near the border with Ivory Coast from taking their produce to the closest markets in the Ivory Coast.Last year US Ambassador Deborah Malac broke ground to another feeder road project in Gbor Payee Town, connecting the towns of Bahn and Payee.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
