(File photo: PTI)HIGHLIGHTSDecision on the next Congress president has been further delayedThe decision has now been postponed till at least July 22There is no consensus over the successor of Rahul GandhiThe long-pending decision on appointing a new Congress president after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation has been further delayed. The decision has now been deferred because of the ongoing Parliament session. Congress sources say a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet will be called only after the session gets over. The decision has now been postponed till at least July 22.The delay is also because of a lack of consensus on one name for the party presidentship. As soon as Congress president Rahul Gandhi tendered his resignation in the days after the Lok Sabha election results on May 23, several names were dropped, including those of Ashok Gehlot, Mallikarjun Kharge among the seniors and Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora among the young leaders. However, no single name has been finalised even after months of deliberation. Now, the senior Congress leadership has decided to call for a meeting and accept the resignation of Rahul Gandhi. Sources said the proposed CWC meet would also appoint a general secretary who can take responsibility for the upcoming elections in several states.According to sources, till the time elections are held to appoint a new Congress president, the appointed general secretary can manage party affairs for six months.Rahul Gandhi, in his 4-page emotional resignation letter earlier this month, had said that he would not recommend a name or push for any candidate. He has also said that a non-Gandhi family member should now be appointed the next Congress president.Almost two months have passed since Rahul Gandhi tendered his resignation on May 25 after the election results. While the top party leadership spent several weeks in pleading with Gandhi to reconsider his decision, they failed to convince him.Days have passed and the top leadership continues to hold meetings and discussions but consensus on the new Congress chief evades them.(With inputs from Kumar Vikrant)Also Read | Why no one wants to be Congress presidentAlso Watch | Time for a non-Gandhi to head Congress?
