If you’ve been keeping up with the news, DJ Williams has had a harrowing year. After flying to the Middle East in April, the guitarist for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and his own solo project Shots Fired was detained abroad for a few weeks. The music community rallied around Williams while the case was settled, with the musician happily returning to the United States a month later. Since then, DJ Williams has returned and has been making his rounds with various musical projects. Today, Williams let fans in Colorado know that they can look forward to catching him live and in-person with the upcoming Colorado debut of his own DJ Williams’ Shots Fired. The project will see the guitarist joined by an ever-rotating cast of musicians from the scene, and for this upcoming run, Williams will be joined by his Tiny Universe bandmates, Chris Stillwell and David Veith. This iteration of Shots Fired also taps the Slightly Stoopid horns players, Daniel Delacruz and Andy Geib, as well as Jeff Franca of Thievery Corporation, Kimberly Dawson from Pimps of Joytime, Max MacVeety of Lyrics Born, and guitarist Cris Jacob. DJ Williams’ Shots Fired will hit the Shakedown Bar in Vail on Friday, September 15th, followed by a performance at Ophelia’s in Denver the next night on Saturday, September 16th. Tickets for their Saturday show are available here.
The contracts of James Morrison, Gareth McAuley, Stephane Sessegnon, Jonas Olsson and Victor Anichebe all expire at the end of the season. Morrison claimed he is yet to enter into discussions with the Baggies over a new one after scoring in Saturday’s 2-2 FA Cup draw with Bristol City. Boss Tony Pulis has thrown down the gauntlet to West Brom’s out-of-contract stars to earn new deals. Albion go to Chelsea on Wednesday and, ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge, Pulis has told his players to stop fearing for their futures. “I think we have four or five people talking to the club about contracts now at the moment,” he said, with the Baggies three points ahead of Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League. “Again it is one you will have to speak to the club about but it is not just James. It is an incentive for the club and an incentive for the players. “For me as a player I never had a worry about trying to sign a long-term contract. I think Harry (Redknapp) gave me my longest contract at Bournemouth. “Generally I was quite happy to run the contract out and if the club wanted me they would give me another one. If they didn’t I was always confident there would be another club out there. “I think things have changed and players want stability and security and all that stuff, it has changed so much it is unbelievable.” And Pulis – who is sweating on Olsson and Anichebe’s hamstring injuries – doubted Morrison’s claim he was yet to speak to the club over a new deal. He added: “I am not so sure that is true. I think there have been discussions. “I wouldn’t be worried if I was James, I wouldn’t be worried if I was one of the ones who are talking to the club now.” Press Association
BuildingGreen’s Top-10 product selections, as in previous years, are drawn from new additions to the company’s GreenSpec product directory. About 200 product listings have been added to the GreenSpec database during the past year. “New products are being introduced all the time, making it a challenge for our staff to keep up,” said Wilson. [No kidding — Mark] “We also continue to come across products that have been on the market for years, but were under our radar screen.” The GreenSpec database includes more than 2,100 product listings.A major driver of the development of green products continues to be the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which awards points for the use of certain product types, such as certified wood, or for the energy savings that green products can achieve. “Designers of LEED buildings are looking for green products, and manufacturers are responding,” said Wilson. In the online version of GreenSpec, users can find products organized by LEED credits as well as by building category and the CSI MasterFormat structure. The 2009 Top-10 Green Building Products are listed below. Did you think, with the Games over, Suresh Kalmadi and his cronies would be in jail by now? And that Sheila Dikshit, Tejinder Khanna, Jaipal Reddy and M.S. Gill would have lost their jobs? Were you expecting guilty IOC, PWD, DDA and NDMC officials to be in chains? Did you,Did you think, with the Games over, Suresh Kalmadi and his cronies would be in jail by now? And that Sheila Dikshit, Tejinder Khanna, Jaipal Reddy and M.S. Gill would have lost their jobs? Were you expecting guilty IOC, PWD, DDA and NDMC officials to be in chains? Did you hope sports bosses who cling like barnacles to a ship’s keel will be removed? Don’t be silly. In India, corrupt politicians don’t usually go to jail; some go to Parliament. If they are lucky, Gandhi sycophants or vote-bank thugs, they may even become Cabinet ministers. So, fat chance sacked chief minister Ashok Chavan will go to prison for his sea-facing role in the Adarsh scam. Vilasrao Deshmukh will continue as the union minister for industries. A Cabinet, which has the 2G-tainted A. Raja as a proud member, doesn’t sack the guilty.Corruption seems to be the 546th member of the Indian Parliament. Some 150 of our esteemed MPs have criminal records. Seventy-two are accused of murder and rape. Corruption is not without its little ironies. Radadiya Vithalbhai Hansrajbhai, Congress MP from Mahatma Gandhi’s Porbandar, tops the list with 16 criminal cases. When it comes to crime and no punishment, the BJP has the most tainted MPs: 42. The Congress follows with 41. When Indian voters are represented by many with criminal records, expecting politicians to go to jail for corruption is naive. In India, corrupt politicians don’t usually go to jail; some go to Parliament. If they are lucky, Gandhi sycophants or vote-bank thugs, they may even become Cabinet ministers.advertisementOfficial corruption is a legacy of the British Empire. When the Indian police force was constituted in British India, the kotwals (aka the chief police officers) responsible for maintaining law and order were paid no salaries. They had to fend for themselves, pay their constables and maintain police stations on their own. Collecting money became a bigger priority than keeping law and order, and extortion got an official face. Villagers, traders and small merchants became victims of police shakedowns and many policemen became henchmen of powerful landlords. The practice continues. A World Bank report calculates that Indian citizens pony up bribes amounting to Rs 21,000 crore yearly. The Central Vigilance Commission receives around 70 corruption complaints a day.Though it must be said that independent India didn’t start off too badly. Jawaharlal Nehru sacked his first finance minister R.K. Shanmukham Chetty for helping industrialists close to the Congress evade income-tax investigations. (Nehru-aide M.O. Mathai’s Reminiscences of the Nehru Age reveals that Chetty was acting on Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s behalf, who made him the sacrificial goat.) Arjun Singh’s father Rao Shiv Bahadur Singh, who was also a minister in Nehru’s Cabinet, was the first Indian minister to be jailed for corruption.Alas, today, the only prison the corrupt politician is in is the helplessness of public imagination. But don’t worry; you will soon forget all this happened. Until another multi-crore scam surfaces and a bunch of self-righteous television commentators invade your drawing room, calling for political blood. Public memory is shorter than newspaper editorials. Until then, stay tuned.
